MCD Research Repository Launch
MCD Research Repository was officially launched by the Dean, Prof Paul Beirne, on 3 June 2009.
3 June 2009
MCD Research Repository, which was a mandatory feature of the RQF assessment, was built in consultation with University of Southern Queensland, and is hosted by the University of Southampton.
Research Reporting and Repository Working Group of the Research Committee, chaired by Rev Dr Shane Mackinlay, had worked towards the development of a research repository specific to the MCD. Members of RRRWG include research coordinators, MCD Kew staff (registrar, director of research, repository manager, repository officer) and a librarian.
MCD Repository has the capability of storing research outputs in a controlled and secure environment. MCD Repository is also able to manage exports through OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative's Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) which provides a mechanism for harvesting metadata records from OAI-compliant repositories which can then be used to create services providing access to aggregated collections contained in several repositories. This means that research done at MCD will be more visible to the wider academic community, and to the general community.
As an institutional repository, MCD enables a broader exposure of research, increased citation, showcasing of research, and it saves time for academics where they can send a URL instead of maintaining their own local copies to send to interested parties.
MCD Repository is hosted within "Open Access" environment via the world wide web, which means increasing preservation and having systematic curation for an organisation's output that is centralised, systematised, consistent and not dependent on individual responsibility. Faculty members will be able to place their research articles into the repository themselves, with oversight of the process by the RTI Repository Liaison Officer. The designated RTI Repository Liaison Officers are:
CTC - Shane Mackinlay
CCTC - Alan Niven
ICSPF - Michael Smith
UFT - Peter Sherlock
WHITLEY - Mark Brett
YTU - Michael Kelly
