Master of Theological Studies Course Information

Description

The Master of Theological Studies (MTS) offers the opportunity to theological graduates to deepen their learning and explore disciplines they had not included in their first theological degree. The degree is flexible, and a wide range of units and disciplines is available.  The BTheol/MTS combination is a primary path to ordination for MCD University of Divinity students.

Course Outcome

An MTS graduate will have developed high-level capacities in analytical thinking, interpreting primary documents, engaging with ideas, and especially in integrating belief and life.

MTS graduates interested in further studies have several options. Those intending to continue coursework studies with a broad range of options may consider the Master of Arts (coursework mode).

Candidates who complete a 12,000 word Research Essay at Distinction standard or higher may enter one of the Masters by Research courses.  

Course Structure

Every candidate for the degree must satisfactorily complete 150 points (normally ten standard units) of study, comprising 120 points of study at graduate level, and 30 points of study at Postgraduate level.

Entry Requirements 

Bachelor degree from the MCD University of Divinity, or equivalent.

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods range from traditional academic essays, assignments and examinations to writing journals, group projects or competency assessment. The methods used for each unit must be approved by the MCD University of Divinity Coursework Studies Committee, to ensure equity in standards.

Duration 

The Master of Theological Studies must be completed in not less than three semesters and not more than five years.  

Study Modes

Candidates normally attend classes on campus.  Some units are available online via the Theology Online program at the United Faculty of Theology.  

Requirement to Receive Qualification

150 points (normally ten standard units) of study, comprising:

  • 120 points of study at graduate level
  • 30 points of study at Postgraduate level.
