MCD eNews November 2009

Dean's Introduction

Dear friends

As 2009 draws to a close, it is time to say farewell to some friends and co-workers, and to welcome new ones.

On December 17th we will be saying farewell, in sadness and deep gratitude, to Liz Anderson, who completes three years as Registrar at the MCD. Liz has worked long, hard and with passion for the MCD during this time, and the MCD is a more professional institution because of her efforts. Liz has done so often in trying circumstances. She lost her mother and father in a short period of time, and literally brought her husband Graeme back to life when his heart stopped and he collapsed in front of her. Through all this grief and trauma, Liz's dedication to her job did not waver. She accomplished much in her time at the MCD, and because of her there are systems and procedures in place which stand as a testament to her creativity and perspicacity. We are considerably in her debt, an indeed owe heartfelt thanks to her for all that she has done for us, and for all that she has achieved.

Norma Koehne is also completing her term of office at the MCD Administration at the end of the year. You will have come to know Norma, and her advanced diplomatic skills, well in her time with us. Norma worked assiduously to gather information from all quarters of the MCD in relation to ERA and Repository, and she donned the hats of Quality Assurance Manager and Centenary Coordinator as well. Norma's quiet professionalism and the achievements that accompanied it, as well as her sparkling sense of humour will be greatly missed.

I would like to introduce to you now two new appointments to the MCD Administration.

Mr Jeff Reany has been appointed Director: Finance and Administration. Jeff is currently employed by Central Queensland University's Melbourne Campus as Head of Programs. In his eight years at CQU he has fulfilled the roles of Head of Academic Programs, Associate Director Finance and Administration, Head of Programs (undergraduate), Program Facilitator, and Lecturer. Jeff holds a Masters degree by Research in Professional Education and Training from Deakin University, an MBA in General Management, a Graduate Diploma of Human Resources Management, both from CQU, a Diploma of Training and Assessment, and a Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training.

Jeff will begin at the MCD on 1st February 2009.

Lindsay Hutchinson has been appointed Research Student Support Officer, and began this role at the MCD Administration on November 2nd. Lindsay came to us from the University of Melbourne, where he was Masters Coordinator, Postgraduate Administrator and Senior Course Officer, Faculty of Arts and Music. Lindsay holds a B.A. (Hons) from Durham University, a D.Ed from the University of Melbourne, an M.Litt from the University of New England, and an M.Mus.Ed from the University of Western Australia. In 1990, Lindsay was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Letters (F.R.S.A.) for contributions to education and community arts programs. He was also the University of Melbourne Organist.

Both Jeff and Lindsay will be present to meet you at the Staff Consultation Day on 11th November.

I do urge all faculty and staff to join us on Staff Consultation Day, not only to meet Jeff and Lindsay, but to participate robustly in the discussion: Our MCD: Charting the Course for the Second Century.

Finally, I wish to extend a very warm invitation to everybody to the launch of Su-un and His World of Symbols, my recently published book on the founder of Donghak, Korea's first indigenous religion (see invitation flyer in this e-letter). I do not expect you to buy the book, although I would not discourage this! But I do wish to invite you to celebrate with my family and myself a project which took extensive chunks of our lives over a three year period, and also to share the life of a mystic visionary whose life and writings had a profound effect on, and helped shape, modern Korean society. And I am sure Charles will be as erudite and as entertaining as usual.

Very best wishes

Prof Paul Beirne
