As the labor of introspection proceeds, one stumbles upon Hegel's insight that the full objectification of the human spirit is the history of the human race. It is in the sum of the products of common sense and common nonsense, of the sciences and the philosophies, of moralities and religions, of social orders and cultural achievements, that there is mediated, set before us the mirror in which we can behold, the originating principle of human aspiration and human attainment and failure. - Bernard Lonergan

  • International Symposium : Monasticism between Culture and Cultures

    8 June 2011

    June 8 - 11, 2011

The third International Symposium of the Monastic Institute of Sant'Anselmo will be devoted to the interaction between monasticism and culture. This theme was already addressed at the 1988 symposium, "Culture and Spirituality in the Monastic Tradition." Over the past two decades interdisciplinary studies have broadened our understanding of "culture," traditionally understood to consist of paradigms, texts, institutions, and literary and artistic creations. Now the term "culture," especially when used in the plural, can also refer to more commonplace manifestations of human nature (cultural anthropology) as well as to phenomena that characterize minority social groups (cultural studies).

After an initial plenary session devoted to this more inclusive understanding of culture, the symposium will be divided into three sections: one for Western monasticism, another for Eastern monasticism, and a separate section for the thirteenth international congress of Regulae Benedicti Studia.

Since monasticism is universally characterized by a degree of separation from ordinary human activities (fuga mundi), the relationship between monasticism and culture is inherently complex. Ideally studies of this relationship will offer information, provide interpretation, and suggest outcomes. All presentations at the symposium, while they may concentrate on one or the other of these areas, should address the other two "Information" includes all that is uncovered through historical research; "interpretation" evaluates the different relationships between monasticism, culture, and cultures; "outcomes" points to possible consequences of these relationships in the present and in the future.

By way of example, the following are some topics that might be addressed: Monasticism and the arts, especially painting, architecture, and music; Monastic schools; Monasteries as the avant-garde of the renaissance in the eighth, twelfth, and fifteenth centuries; Western monks in Eastern cultures; Debates on the place of erudition, for example, between Nil Sorsky and Joseph of Volokolamsk in Byzantine monasticism, or between Jean Mabillon and Jean Bouthillier de Ranc in the West; African cultures and monasticism: Adaptation or conflict?; Monastic rules and new theological paradigms; New monastic communities; Monasticism vis- post modernity, virtual worlds, and  globalization; Questions surrounding inculturation and/or acculturation, interculturalism and/or multiculturalism; Challenges faced by Hindu and Buddhist forms of monasticism as they arrive in the West.

Presentations can be in the form of a "communication" (15 minutes) or a "lecture" (40 minutes).

Presentations can be made in Italian, English, French, German, and Spanish.

Those who wish to make a presentation at the symposium are asked to send a title and a brief description (100 words) prior to October 1, 2010 to symposium2011@santanselmo. org or

"Globalisation for the Common Good and the Dialogue of Civilisations: Building Peace, Justice, and Prosperity Together " June 12 – 16, 2011 Bibliotheca Alexandria, Egypt (http://www.bibalex.org/English/index.aspx). I am delighted to inform you that our 10th Anniversary Annual International Conference will be hosted at Bibliotheca Alexandria, Egypt, during June 12 – 16, 2011. This major global conference is being convened by Dr. Kamran Mofid, Founder, Globalisation for the Common Good Initiative and Ms. Heba El-Rafey, Director, Dialogue Forum, Bibliotheca Alexandria.

    Dear friends,

It is a time for a celebration. The Globalisation for the Common Good Initiative (GCGI) turns 10 next year.

It is amazing that these past ten years have gone by so quickly.  What began as a simple idea, to share the practical wisdom of the common good through dialogue, generosity, and kindness, has blossomed into an internationally recognized nonprofit organization.  We have become the leading resource "inspiring people to do great things for the common good".

From the very beginning, I knew we would succeed. We have reached out to many around the world and become an all volunteer network of individuals, approaching our growth organically and focusing on our vision and mission.

As you might imagine, in the initial days taking our first steps in developing a vision and programme for the common good, we were met with a great deal of skepticism, apprehension, as well as thankfully, some warm embraces and love. We were energized by all of those early experiences and continued to find ways to build ideas, programmes and initiatives grounded in our main message and theme of Globalisation for the Common Good.

Perhaps our greatest accomplishment has been our ability to bring Globalisation for the Common Good into the common vocabulary and awareness of a greater population while initiating the necessary discussion as to its meaning and potential in our personal and collective lives.

Over the past nine years, The Globalisation for the Common Good Initiative has become a global family of friends, a place of hope, kindness, generosity, and community focused upon the greater good. We have reached this level of success and recognition because of you and are grateful every day for your support whether as direct volunteers, occasional admirers, through your inspirational ideas and sponsorship of our conferences and more. Mostly, we are humbled by your courage to be an example of our purpose while inspiring us for what we are and what we do.

In due course, I will give my own special thanks and gratitude to all those who have enabled and empowered me to do what I do at Globalisation for the Common Good. For now I want to extend a very warm invitation to all of you to come to Alexandria in 2011 and celebrate this very happy occasion together.

    With all my love,

    Kamran
