  • Staff Consultation Day 2009

    11 November 2009

    Dear Colleagues

    As 2009 draws to a close, it is time to reflect on, and celebrate the year, and to plan for the future. Staff Consultation Day always presents an excellent opportunity to do this.

    As you are well aware, the MCD is about to celebrate its Centenary, and is also facing a number of opportunities and challenges which will determine how it proceeds into its second century of existence. I would like to take the opportunity of Staff Consultation Day to discuss with you plans for the Centenary, and plans for the new century we are about to enter. The theme of the day has been chosen with this in mind. Some of the opportunities and challenges which the MCD is facing on the cusp of its second century are:

    • Relating to the Federal government in a new way through the composition in 2010 of a Compact between the government and the MCD, which includes a new method of allocating research funding;
    • Adapting to the new accountability and accrediting regime of the Federal government under the auspices of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency;
    • Deciding on the issue of Specialist University Status for the MCD;
    • Preparing for Cycle II Quality Audit in 2012;
    • Expanding the MCD to incorporate new institutions, and to establish new relationships within the university/Higher Education sector.

    I will outline these and other issues in an opening address, which will be followed by a plenary session focussing on Our MCD and how we envisage it responding to the opportunities and challenges it faces. Assisting us will be two individuals who, through their extensive and wide-ranging experience, will bring insight and wisdom to the discussion-- Dr Maryanne Confoy and Associate Professor Andrew McGowan. Key points and conclusions of the discussion will be recorded, and I will present these to the MCD Council at its final meeting of the year on 2nd December.

    The four Fields will meet in the afternoon to discuss issues of common concern and to choose Chairs and Deputy Chairs of Examiners for 2010.

    I urge you to come to Whitley College on November 11th to meet, greet and relax with your colleagues, to discuss issues of concern and opportunity with them, and to celebrate who we are, and what together we might become.
